God, The Mother
The symbol depicted in this painting is called AWURADE BAATANFO, meaning God, the Mother. It represents the nurturing aspects of a woman (the devine) and the caring nature of God as a good parent. This Adinkra symbol system was used in Ghana used by the Akan people to convey various concepts, values, and principles. This piece tells a story of not only the realities of motherhood but also telling a story of motherhood from various perspectives.
The sunflower symbolizes loyalty and admiration, qualities often associated with a mother's bond with her children. Sunflowers, known for their bright, sunny appearance and tendency to follow the sun, can also be seen as a metaphor for a mother's role as a source of light and guidance.
